IITJEE 2010

I was reading a regional newspaper today and I could see two coaching institutes put a full page ad. And then I turn a couple of pages and there's something printed about some toppers from AP. There was a special mention of an institute from Patna that has got all of its students qualified in the JEE. The institute is special coz it's not a corporate coaching institute, but teaches backward(economically, I guess) students. Also in the newspaper was a breakdown of the number of seats in each IIT and then the number of students from each region who qualified and all... nothing very unusual about all that. But I read something that seriously shocked me.

A guy whose AIR was less than 20.. he says he is really interested in the civil or administrative services. A guy is interested in business, probably something in the real estate side.. Some guy has absolutely no idea of what he wants to do in life. A girl wants to do an MBA.
Here are some students who are allegedly some of the smartest in the country. The so-called "cream" of the country.. and they don't know that they don't need a B Tech or they don't need to screw 4 years of your life learning what an engineer needs to know if he/she wants to get an MBA. If I wanted to get into the civil services, I'd definitely be learning stuff related to that and wouldn't even want to write the JEE. If I wanted an MBA, I'd have gone for a degree in management, not in engineering.

It doesn't end here. I know that what you would've wanted in life wouldn't always coincide with what you are. But these "wonder kids" say they 'want' to do something that's no way related to engineering, and yet love to get into an IIT. I'm really surprised to find people like this- they can't realize that 4 years of mugging at some IIT would do very little to contribute to what they're going to be, and yet they emerge as the "toppers" in a national exam that's supposed to test a student's (whatever).
The only line that came to my mind when I read all that.. "What the Duck??!!!!"

More arbit stuff.. around 470 thousand students appeared for the JEE... and 80 thousand were from AP.. more than 1 out of 6....

Latest... I don't mean to offend someone, but this stuff seriously sucks...
Another topper's statements..

"I had dreamt of entering IIT from Class VIII,” he said. “I worked hard to realise my goal for the last five years. I am delighted that I made it to the IITs. It is a dream come true."

Just didn't want to put the name.. To think about getting into an IIT.. makes sense. I'd love to put an app to MIT or Stanford, obviously because there are a lot of resources and oppurtunities. But "dreaming" about getting into an IIT for 5 years.. bulls**t. what's more.. this guy "wants to join IIT-Mumbai but has not decided which stream to opt for." This is just an example. Again no offense intended, but this is how most people out there are like. Dream about getting to a place but clueless about what u'll do there....

I can only wonder.. these guys are almost 18... ready to vote, to decide who leads the country. Yet the actions look so immature. Would love to see some comments.

P.S: No offense intended against any individual, only against the people, as a group, and against the system :P

  1. Yes Very Nice Blog Sabarish.. i Liked the point 1 out of 6 student is from AP
I feel our people give more stress on their children to go out there and write IIT and get selected and not know what their kids are really interested in. This is common in A.p also Like you see child,s First target is to get 550 in tenth join in some srichaitanya or naryana and then the battle starts screw them in the coolege for so many damn hours and they feel they wud get the result..!! Did parents ever assk their children do u want to do iit?? or learn some other course i feel No .. !!
My present classmates are there in B.tech who are not interested Crazy still they paid a Lkah and joined in my Univ . .!! Is it a status for parents to tell their child studies in a prestigous coolge more important or their happiness i dont understand...!! This should change hope it does..

  3. that is some serious shit... getting into an IIT for extra credentials.. and that too to get an MBA... these kids are really screwed up...
can't blame them.. when we took the exam, I remember some questions.. esp in matching I guess.. a function f(x) was given and we were supposed to calculate f(2) and things like that... there were a lot of questions that were too easy. I thought a guy needs to get lucky coz a lot of ppl make arbit mistakes and if a guy who knows very little manages to work all he knows without mistakes, he's through....
I guess they should atleast put an interview.. then maybe they'll get trained for that too :D

  5. nice views man!!

But we need to acknowledge one thing - that it is happening and in a very big way. We need to understand at a grass-root level why this might be happening. Though there might be many reasons, the following seem to be the most prominent to me:
Firstly, it is our education system. We always only focus on science and maths right from a school level without taking regard of holistic education and respect for the other streams. Most parents would be horrified if their child tells them he wants to take up arts or commerce or something else!
Secondly, once you get into the science stream, the next things parents see is medical or a seat in IIT, nothing else, even though there are so many courses that are now available. They do mostly giving no regard to what their children feel or what what they really want to do. This may be due to the pride associated with having their children studying in reputed institutes. This is fine, but there must be a fine line somewhere. Thirdly, in this material world and cut-throat competition, all that we see in any case is just the gain and loss of the whole thing on us without considering anyone else, that must change.
Lastly, JEE is a system and in any system there will be ways to crack it. So it is very difficult to say who is deserving and who is not. All that they can do is optimize the process so that greatest fraction of the type of students that they want come into IIT.

I think it is perfectly fine for these guys to go into whatever stream that they choose to provided when they are entering IIT they hold a true thirst for the ocean of knowledge and a chance to discover their true potential and most importantly a love for engineering.
Somehow we are growing up too fast and so concerned about a distant future that we are forgetting how to truly enjoy and live life in the present.

I hope that these brilliant guys who come to IIT get enamoured by being exposed to the best of what technology can offer them and if something strikes a chord with them, even if it is just 1%, they should go all out for it and make the world a better place to live in with the technology that they develop.

I believe that in IIT you are exposed to the best of many things not just technology. That is good and that helps in widening your horizons. But we must all keep in mind that in the end it is not all just about money(though a very big fraction of it is). If by our actions we can make the world a better place to live in and bring a smile to somebody's life, our lives are really worth it!

accepted, IIT doesn't mean just some hi funda stuff... But then, every place has its stuff.. for instance, we don't know what the outside world looks like, about ragging, or all those bitch fights on the streets, or painful things in life... everything in an IIT is just too smooth. You go and study in a college outside, you get somethings, but u loose others, like maybe fundaes from seniors or stuff... A guy in a college outside who's really enthued would make best use of every possible resource while we don't... we got too many resources here and that guy from outside is a lot better than most of us coz he's learnt to survive when he's got very little to work with... stuff like that.(I really don't know why I said all this)

What pissed me off is, after getting a nice AIR, they say they still want to get an MBA or get into the civils or something.. does it make any sense when you can go into any other nice institute.. I bet there are a lot of univs that are as good as the IITs.

Since we talk about the system, I've been thinking of something that made a lot of sense, atleast to me... teach the kid only languages, moral sciences, civil duties and a little history and mythology till he's 10-12 years old.... make him read stories of great people, let him get a good moral foundation, teach him languages when he's very young.. let him understand what being a citizen is...
I believe a kid can learn the basic algebra taught from kindergarten to tenth class in just a couple of years when he's older, coz he understands stuff properly, and probably is not really as uninterested as we were when we had the same math, science, social classes right from second or third class to tenth class.. will put a nice post on this system I thought of very soon...

  9. nice blog dude!!!!!!I wanted to put a status saying why the f*** do ppl come to IIT if they want to get into civils but realised most of my classmates are like that....ppl here just come dont make use of resources copy readings in Lab which is supposed to give us practical understanding of things......What is more the topper says he want to do research in physics and he opts for electrical engineering in IITB.And most of the guys who are in top20 invariably choose CS in IITB.I wonder why they do it!!!!!!

  10. wht u said was was correct to some extend (infact almost).....but lets take the case of civils....now why would the upsc commisssion include eng subjects as optional subjects when being an engineer wouldnt make sense for a civils aspirant .........gettin into iit or any good eng institute is just to get a quality education in engineering ..,,,,...see....if u join a school u dont keep in mind ur future plans.....why cant we take it like that...

but i agree that having a clarity of which discipline to take is non sense for a student who has just completed +2

gettin into a good universities also moulds ur character involuntarily......it has nothing to to do with havin perfect future plans for ur carrer
    ...
we always have an option after eng to take our carrer as we wish.......either civils or mba or anything

  11. Agreed.. you can do whatever you want after engineering... but working ur a$$ off for 3-4 years to get into an IIT when you're not really interested in what's taught there.. it really comes as a surprise to me.
